Clare M. Dunsford, Ph.D., is an associate dean in the Morrissey College of Arts and Sciences at Boston College. She has been an adjunct lecturer at Harvard University and Boston College, teaching courses in writing, poetry, literature and censorship, and literature and illness. “Base Pairs” is the basis for a chapter in her memoir, Spelling Love with an X: A Mother, a Son, and the Gene that Binds Them (Beacon Press, 2007), exploring her experience as a mother of a boy with Fragile X syndrome. Dunsford is also a contributor to The Story Within: Personal Essays on Genetics and Identity, edited by Amy Boesky (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2013).
