Interested in Kenyon College?
- The Admissions Office will be offering campus tours at 2:00 and 4:00 pm EDT on arrival day: Sunday, June 21, for Session One and Sunday, July 12, for Session Two.

Enrollment and Tuition Policies
Tuition Payments
To guarantee your place in the workshop you have been assigned, please submit the enrollment form and non-refundable deposit by April 8. Balance payments are due May 18. We prefer credit card payment via our secure online store. To pay online, please visit: https://kenyonreview.org/product/yw-tuition/.
To pay by check, please make your check payable to “Kenyon Review” and mail it to our office.
Cancellation Policy
If you can no longer attend, let us know as soon as possible. Please see below for the specific cancellation policy dates and details for each workshop week.
Session One: June 21-July 4
If you cancel your enrollment on or before May 18, the Kenyon Review will keep the non-refundable deposit. If you cancel your enrollment after May 18 but before June 1, the Kenyon Review will keep the non-refundable deposit and a $500 cancellation fee. There will be no refund of tuition if you cancel on or after June 1. There will be no refund of tuition after the workshop begins.
Session Two: July 12-25
If you cancel your enrollment on or before May 18, the Kenyon Review will keep the non-refundable deposit. If you cancel your enrollment after May 18 but before June 19, the Kenyon Review will keep the non-refundable deposit and a $500 cancellation fee. There will be no refund of tuition if you cancel on or after June 19. There will be no refund of tuition after the workshop begins.
Enrollment Form
Check your emails for a message from Submittable with the subject line “Kenyon Review Young Writers Enrollment Form.” You may access the enrollment form by clicking the “View Form” button in that message. You may also access the enrollment form directly from your Submittable account:
- Log on to the Submittable account you used to submit your application
- Select your Young Writers application in the submission list
- Select the “Forms” tab near the top of the page
Changing Session or Workshop Format
Changing Sessions within the Residential Workshop
If you can no longer attend the session you have been assigned and would like to request to switch to the other residential workshop session, please select the “Session Change Request” option on the enrollment form no later than April 8th and we will add you to the waitlist for the session you request.
Because we admit a specific number of students to each session, we cannot guarantee a change until a spot opens up in your requested session. If you submit your session change request on the enrollment form by April 8th, you do not need to submit your deposit until you receive a final answer from us about session availability—we will hold your spot in the session you have been assigned until we know whether a spot opens in the session you have requested on the form. If/when spots open up, participants are admitted to requested sessions on a rolling basis. We will notify you as soon as a spot opens to confirm that you still want to switch sessions.
Changing from the Residential to the Online Workshop
If you are no longer able to attend the residential workshop, but would like to attend the online workshop, please select the “Switch to Online” option on the enrollment form no later than April 8th. Because you have been accepted to the residential workshop, you are automatically guaranteed acceptance to the online workshop session you select on the enrollment form. If you request a switch to the online workshop, you do not need to submit the residential workshop deposit. You will receive a new acceptance email, with new payment and enrollment information for the online program, in early May. If you were awarded financial aid for the residential workshop, please see the new acceptance email for the updated aid amount. Please note, if you choose to switch to the Young Writers Summer Online Workshop on the enrollment form, you will forfeit your spot in the residential workshop.
Travel Plans
Arriving and Departing by Car
Check-in will begin at noon on Sunday at Mather Residence Hall, where you will be living during the program. If you are arriving by car, please plan to arrive on campus between 12:00 and 4:00 p.m. Click here for driving directions to Kenyon College.
The last Saturday of the program is a travel day. Participants must move out of their dorm rooms by 10:00 a.m. If you are departing by car, please plan to leave campus no later than 12:00 p.m.
Kenyon is a walking campus and students may not have access to a car during the program. Any student who drives their own car to the program must give their car keys to a Young Writers staff member upon arrival. Young Writers staff will return your keys on departure day.
Arriving and Departing by Plane
The closest airport, John Glenn Columbus International Airport (CMH), is about an hour’s drive from Gambier. There is no public transportation from the airport to Gambier, so we provide a shuttle service. There is an $80 round-trip ($40 one-way) shuttle fee for this service that should be included in the final balance payment for the program.
On arrival day, a shuttle will pick up participants at the airport approximately every two and a half to three hours beginning at 10:00 a.m. The final airport pick up will be 5:30 p.m.
On departure day, shuttles will leave campus promptly at the following times:
- 7:00 a.m.
- 10:00 a.m.
- 1:00 p.m.
Please schedule your flights accordingly, and keep in mind that on departure day, participants must leave on an airport shuttle at least two and a half hours before flight departure times to allow ample time for travel to the airport, check-in, security screenings, etc.
Daily Schedule
All weekdays follow a similar schedule:
- 7:00-8:30 a.m. — Breakfast
- 8:30-10:00 a.m. — Workshop
- 10:00-10:30 a.m. — Morning break
- 10:30 a.m.-12:00 p.m. — Workshop
- 12:00-1:30 p.m. — Lunch/free time
- 1:30-3:30 p.m. — Workshop
- 3:30-5:30 p.m. — Free time for reading, writing, socializing, and athletic activities
- 5:30-6:30 p.m. — Dinner
- 6:45-7:00 p.m. — General meeting
- 7:00-8:00 p.m. — Evening readings (visiting writers read in the first week; all participants read in the second week)
- 8:00-11:00 p.m. — Free time and evening activities (parties, movies, games, crafts, bonfire, talent show, etc.)
- 11:00 p.m. — Curfew
Weekend days are much more unstructured, giving students time to rest, catch up on reading and writing assignments, and enjoy downtime with friends.
Housing and Meals
Housing
Participants are housed in an air-conditioned dorm with double-occupancy bedrooms. The first floor has multi-occupancy male bathrooms, multi-occupancy female bathrooms, and two single-occupancy gender neutral bathrooms. The second and third floors have multi-occupancy male bathrooms and multi-occupancy female bathrooms. Multi-occupancy bathrooms each have two toilet stalls and two shower stalls. There is a lounge for all participants on the second floor and a kitchen for all participants on the third floor. There are no elevators in the building. Participants are supervised by Resident Advisors who are Kenyon College students who live with the students in the dorm and help run extracurricular activities.
On the enrollment form, you may note whether you have a floor preference. If you have any questions or concerns about the dorm or housing preferences, please let us know.
Meals
All meals are served in Peirce Dining Hall, which offers a variety of menu options including vegetarian and allergy-sensitive choices. Peirce is a nut-free facility, other than a small sequestered peanut butter station located outside of the food service area. The peanut butter station is well-marked and easy to avoid. There is also a “gluten-free/allergy-free” area in the dining hall, where students can find allergen free staples. All foods are labeled, and participants can check with dining hall staff if they have specific questions about anything being served.
Please be sure to note any allergies or dietary restrictions on your enrollment form so that Resident Advisors, instructors, and staff can be careful about allergens and potential reactions during this session.
Health Information, Special Needs, Accessibility, and Medical Care
To ensure a safe and successful stay at Young Writers, a parent or guardian must provide complete and accurate medical information on the enrollment form. All information shared in the medical portion of the enrollment form is confidential and will only be made available to Young Writers staff or medical professionals directly involved in the safety and supervision of participants. Be sure to note any of the following on your enrollment form:
- Immunization history (month and year of each vaccine dose listed on the enrollment form). We strongly encourage all participants to be fully immunized with the vaccines listed in the enrollment form. We will use this information to guide our response to any vaccine-preventable disease outbreaks during the program.
- Special dietary needs (allergies and/or restrictions). Aside from a sequestered and well-marked peanut butter station, Kenyon’s dining hall is a nut-free facility and makes every effort to label other possible allergens and provide allergen-free alternatives depending on participant needs.
- Severe allergies
- Over the counter and prescription medications, including dosage and the reason for taking the medication. Participants who take prescription medication will be responsible for administering their own medication.
- Learning differences or disabilities, especially those that may impact your workshop experience and/or require technology use or other exemptions in the classroom.
- Mobility issues—some classroom and dorm spaces on campus are not accessible; please let us know of any mobility issues so we can plan housing and classroom accommodations accordingly.
- Any other physical or mental health conditions or concerns that Young Writers staff should be aware of to ensure your safety during the program.
Please note that Kenyon College does not provide a nurse or other healthcare professional on campus in the summer. If a participant becomes sick or injured during the program, a staff member will take them to the Knox Community Hospital Urgent Care or Emergency Room, located about 10 minutes from campus. Parents/guardians will be responsible for any healthcare costs incurred.
We will provide limited mental health counseling support as needed during our program. See the enrollment form for more details and counseling consent information.
What to Bring
Must haves:
- Casual and comfortable warm weather clothes
- A light jacket, sweater, or sweatshirt for cool evenings
- Pajamas
- A nicer outfit to wear for your public reading
- Comfortable shoes
- Raincoat and/or umbrella
- Cell phone with charger
- Toiletries (soap, shampoo, toothbrush, toothpaste, etc.)
- Over the counter and prescription medications. Participants are responsible for administering all of their own medications. Be sure to list all medications and dosages on your enrollment form.
- A notebook and pens. Participants write by hand in workshop*.
Recommended:
- Laptops, tablets, and other electronic devices. Electronics are not typically used in classrooms*, but there may be opportunities for students to use their computers/tablets for certain workshops and events. Students will have some access to a small computer lab on campus, but most students prefer bringing their own electronic devices for writing outside of class, downtime entertainment, etc. You will have wireless internet access throughout campus.
- Water bottle
- Laundry bag and quarters (laundry facilities are available on campus; $2.25 for washer, $1.50 for dryer)
- Shower shoes/flip flops
- Some spending money. Students’ needs (and parents’ resources) will vary. On average, anywhere from $50 to $75 should more than suffice. Please be sure to plan ahead for baggage fees on return flights. There is an ATM on campus.
- Flashlight with batteries
Optional:
- Additional linens. Towels, sheets, a pillow, and blanket will be provided, but you may want to bring your own for more abundance and better quality. The bed size is extra long twin.
- Sports equipment (frisbees, rackets, etc.)
- Musical instruments
*If you need to use technology in the classroom because of a learning difference or disability, please note this on your enrollment form.

Community Guidelines and Program Rules
The Kenyon Review Young Writers Program brings together a diverse community of participants, instructors, and staff to share our work and grow together as writers, readers, and thinkers. We want each participant to feel safe and protected in our community. As part of Kenyon College, we abide by a nondiscrimination policy regarding race, color, religion, national origin, disability, veteran status, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, sex, genetic information, and age.
To provide accessible, inclusive spaces for each and every participant to learn, The Kenyon Review asks each participant to commit to these Community Guidelines:
- Be respectful, responsible, and fair during workshops and extracurricular activities
- Commit to being on time for daily workshops and required events
- Treat each other with dignity, respect, and fairness
- Share, act, and communicate honestly, taking turns to offer constructive feedback to others
- Recognize our commonalities and respect differences that make each writer unique
- Listen to new ideas with an open mind, expect to explore and expand your assumptions
- Take care of yourself and be supportive of other writers to take care of themselves
If at any time a participant feels uncomfortable, or experiences bullying, harassment, inappropriate language or content please notify your instructor, Resident Advisor, or a Kenyon Review staff member as soon as possible.
In addition to the Community Guidelines, all participants in the Kenyon Review Young Writers Program must abide by the following Program Rules and Regulations:
- Kenyon College and the Village of Gambier are your home for two weeks and must be treated responsibly. You will be held accountable for any damage to college or village property.
- Within the dorm, you are only allowed in your assigned hall and shared common spaces.
- No alcohol, tobacco (including any and all nicotine products), or drugs are to be used at any time.
- No one is allowed to leave campus for any reason without permission from Kenyon Review staff.
- Participants are not permitted to visit any dorm other than their assigned residence hall.
- Curfew and quiet hours begin at 11:00 p.m. You must be in your own room and quiet until morning.
- During the week, everyone must attend all meals in the dining hall.
- You are responsible for your swipe card, lanyard, and room key. The replacement fee is $40 for your swipe card and $150 for your key.
- Anyone who deliberately violates the rules and the spirit of the Young Writers program, including the respect and tolerance we owe each other, will be sent home.
