Sunday Funnies: Jane Austen

Don’t you just fall more and more in love with the world of Jane Austen every three-day weekend; even wishing you could live in that world–on occasion? (It’s not just for women, boys!) Go see Becoming Jane, which explores a brief period in Jane Austen‘s life prior to her celebrated status as a “lady novelist.” It’s true, “high school’s never over,” and really–that’s when all the drama of our lives was so good! Becoming Jane speaks about writing, the imagination versus lived experience, and the things writers do or don’t do in order to create an environment around them in which they can write. Oh yeah, and love. It’s also about “holding out for a hero.” What else is a girl to do except to ask “what would Jane do?” Jane, who stayed single her whole life, rather than marry for any reason other than “profound” love. There’s really nothing like a three-day weekend and every conceivable version of a Jane Austen story. American Colonial, Latter-day saints, even Bollywood! How could you go wrong singing to “no life without wife” cuddled on the couch with a bowl of popcorn? Like the ladies of ‘book club‘ fame say, “reading Jane is a freakin’ mine field,” but Jane Austen truly is the “perfect antidote to life!”
