Have you ever seen a house move? The future home of The Kenyon Review slid over twenty-four inches this afternoon, while five of us applauded. Tonight the crew will rearrange the I-beams below, and tomorrow Neff Cottage will move six feet in another direction. It’s quite magical.
The Writer’s Almanac poetry pick of the day was Rebecca McClanahan‘s “Autobiography of the Cab Driver Who Picked Me Up At a Phoenix Hotel to Catch a Four A.M. Flight and Began to Speak in (Almost) Rhyming Couplets.”
Rebecca herself is one of the cornerstones of our summer Writers’ Workshop. This poem is one of my favorites; it ends with the unforgettable line, “The shortest distance between two points is always under construction.” You can listen to or read the whole poem here.
