Book Club Check In: Mailer’s “The Castle in the Forest”

Hello readers! I just KNOW that those hours on the airplane, or in the car, or waiting for the turkey when you’re not a football fan can be spent exploring the opening pages of this month’s book, The Castle in the Forest.

I’ve just begun reading and I do love the first person POV in the book. I’m intrigued by whether or not we can trust our dear narrator (I think not!)–especially when he confesses to embellishing the details of Hitler’s early life. My friend tells me he hasn’t read the book but that it has something to do with God and the Devil fighting over Hitler’s soul. We shall see.

Part of me feels like I need a history brushup so that I can truly enjoy some of the nuances of the text. However, I’m a firm believer in texts standing on their own, and so I won’t beat myself up too much. Digging into the book, I underlined this little phrase: “Where is the German who does not try to understand him? Yet where can you find one who is content with the answer?” That could be the instigator of the entire text, I think. Would love to hear where you’re at. Happy reading!
