Friends, it’s a sad Sunday for me; I’ve just learned that my beloved cat Sadie is terminally ill. This got me to counting dead pets; morbid, but true. The latest issue of Poetry has a poem by Robin Robertson called “Cat, Failing” that brought tears. I think we’ve all written little poems celebrating well-loved pets. This is because poetry does make you feel a bit better, doesn’t it? I think there should be more poems that celebrate our pets! Not all poems have to be so serious, right? I’ve written many a little piece about my cats, and so have others! I’m put in mind of Peter Gethers’ delicious little books about his Scottish Fold, Norton. That cat always had fantastic adventures. Speaking of adventures, even Andrew Lloyd Webber was inspired by cats; he wrote a whole musical about them! Perhaps cat poems and cat stories aren’t the highest art, but they sure are comforting.
