Everyone in the KR office continues to reel from the recent loss of poet Mahmoud Darwish. Political and elegant, Darwish’s poetry rises both from the complexites of the Palestinian experience and from his own sophisticated and measuring interiority. Northrop Frye once famously said that we go to Macbeth to learn about what a man feels like after he has gained a kingdom and lost his soul; we can turn to Darwish’s poetry to learn what a man feels having lived in the profound braid of violence, beauty, history and promise that comprises one of the most tumultuous regions in the world.
Below, find a Darwish poem published in the Summer 2005 issue of KR. In the coming weeks and months, look for KR to publish other features commemorating Darwish’s life and work.
