Ramadan Notes, Late Night, Day 21

The guests have gone, the kitchen is clean.

We had eighteen people here tonight for fast-breaking meal.

I sat at one end of our long impromptu table, really three tables fit together, and watched everyone talking with each other. I liked all the little groups, friends from various circles meeting each other.

Before the meal I asked everyone to reflect on all the various confluences of energy and individuals that brought the food to us and brought us together there.

In yoga it’s called the “diamond-net of Indhra”–all the ways we are connected to each other through space and time. In Islam it is called (roughly) kismat.

It is exciting to bring a community together at the end of the fast. One of the non-Muslim folks asked me what the physical part of the fast is like.

Unlike earlier in the month I am finding myself with greater energy now.

Now turning into the last week of the fast, both missing it in advance, and also wondering what my life and body will feel like once I leave it behind.

Five of us went upstairs to the yoga and meditation room to pray. It was the second time in as many weeks that I have participated in the communal prayer.

And for the first time in my own house.

I want to stay up longer, think more about all of this, but my first responsibility is to the practice itself. Which means I have to wake up in six hours, so now is the time for sleep.
