It’s All Happening

Happy New Year! January has come thick and fast at KR, full of planning for the spring season. Lots and lots and lots afoot, which I’ll get to in a second. But first and foremost, a huge thanks to the last round of bloggers here: Cody Walker, Tamiko Beyer, Jay Thompson, William Walsh, Nancy Jooyoun Kim, Elizabeth Ame Staudt and Sierra Nelson–what a dream. All the posts by that crew will be archived on the site; you’ll be able to get your fix ad infinitum. We’re going to take a little time to circle the blog wagons here before a new crew comes in, and make sure we’re keeping you up to date on what KR is up to.

  • There’s still time to submit to KR for this reading period, but not much. Submissions close at midnight on Jan. 15th–make sure you get your submissions in by then! Nine days is just about enough time to make a short story perfect? Or to go 11% of the way around the world? Send us the goods.
  • The KR Short Fiction Contest for Writers under 30 opens Feb. 1st, and will be accepting submissions throughout the month. This is a free contest, and the winning story is published in KR. The author of that story gets a tuition scholarship to the 2011 KR Writers Workshop. Ron Carlson will judge the contest in 2011 (you heard me right.) Guidelines here. Free copy of a chapbook edition of past winners mailed to entrants at the end of the submission period. NO SUBMISSION FEE. Pinch yourself; this is real.
  • Copies of that chapbook available at AWP as a gift from KR at our table–be sure to stop by! Also letterpress coasters from our mighty little Pilot letterpress:
The caption under the little man on this book mark says "Poetry makes you strong." He's right. Coming to a coaster near you.

…as well as deeply discounted print subscriptions. Come see us! Table C31.

  • Also at AWP: Be sure to check out our readings. We’re sponsoring two–one on Friday, at noon, in the Virgina C Room in the Marriott Wardman Hotel, Lobby Level, featuring past winners of the Short Fiction Contest: Megan Anderegg Malone, Mika Taylor, Meghan Mayhew Bergman, Christopher Feliciano Arnold, Nick Ripatrazone, and Cara Blue Adams. It. will. be. awesome. The second reading will be Friday night at Asylum Bar (2471 18th St. 15 min walk from conference), launching at 7:30pm, and staying in the stratosphere all night. We’re joining forces with Monsters of Poetry and Rescue Press. Featuring: Julia Story, Christie Ann Reynolds, Zach Savich, Shane McCrae, Jess Lacher, Becka Mara McKay, Hannah Sanghee Park, Daniel Khalastchi, Kevin Gonzalez, & Adam Fell. $2 donation at the door gets you a raffle ticket for signed books and subscriptions. Can’t go wrong. We’ll be featuring writers who will be appearing on KRO.
  • A positively huge semester of free readings at Kenyon College, many of which we’ll have a hand in. More on that in the next post.

About the Program

The Kenyon Review Associates Program provides Kenyon students with valuable experience in literary editing, publishing, and programming. KR Associates work closely with Kenyon Review staff, gaining valuable experience in a number of editing, publishing, and programming areas including manuscript evaluation, publicity and marketing, copy editing, developing web site and social media content, outreach programming, event planning and promotion, and other creative and editorial projects

KR Associates attend regular seminars conducted by Kenyon Review editorial staff, visiting readers, and publishing industry professionals. These seminars cover a wide range of topics including editorial philosophy, evaluation of submissions, print and electronic production, marketing, and design.

KR Associates also enjoy exclusive access to visiting writers and speakers, free issues of The Kenyon Review, and valuable work experience and employment references.

This program is made possible through an initiative of the Kenyon Review, part of the mission of which is to contribute to the enrichment of the academic, cultural, and artistic life of the Kenyon College community.

Requirements and Expectations

  • Submission Evaluation: All Associates are required to read and evaluate eight Kenyon Review submissions per week. Associates who are not able to complete their weekly submission assignments for more than two weeks in a row may not be allowed to continue in the program.
  • Trainings and Seminars: In-person attendance is mandatory at all trainings and seminars. We plan on scheduling six to eight seminars per semester, and most will take place on Thursdays during common hour.
  • Literary Engagement: Associates are expected to participate in literary events on campus and throughout the local community.

Application Details

Applications for the Associates Program are accepted each fall. Kenyon students will receive more information about the program and a link to the application via campus email near the beginning of the fall semester.
