Announcing the KR Fellowships

KR Fellowships
The Kenyon Review is pleased to announce the KR Fellowships. These two-year post-graduate positions are intended for creative writers who have already completed the MFA or PhD degree and are seeking time to develop as writers, teachers, and editors. Applications may be submitted between October 1 and December 1. Two fellows, a poet and a prose writer, will arrive in Gambier, Ohio in August 2012.

“This marvelous new initiative has been inspired by the great tradition of Kenyon Review Fellowships awarded in the 1950s to writers such as Flannery O’Connor and W. S. Merwin in their formative years,” according to David Lynn, editor of The Kenyon Review. “These fellowships represent a significant fulfillment of one aspect of our continuing mission: to recognize, publish, and support extraordinary authors in the early stages of their careers.”

KR Fellows are expected to undertake a significant writing project and to attend regular individual meetings with faculty mentors. Fellows will typically teach one semester class per year in the English Department of Kenyon College. In their non-teaching semester they will engage with the creative and editorial projects of The Kenyon Review and KROnline. Fellows will also participate in The Kenyon Review summer programs.

“We believe that after two years, these KR Fellows will be more mature and sophisticated writers, teachers, and editors,” Associate Editor Sergei Lobanov-Rostovsky noted. “As a result, they will be attractive candidates for academic positions as well as for significant publishing opportunities.”

Fellowships will include a stipend of $32,500, plus health benefits. Fellows are required to live in the local community in order to attend workshops, readings and other public events, and to contribute to The Kenyon Review, the English Department, and the broader cultural life at Kenyon. This fellowship is a full-time academic commitment and is not to be pursued concurrently with another degree program.
