Nicholas Howe has published essays on place and travel in the Yale Review, Southwest Review, and Dissent. His Crossing an Inland Sea, in which this piece appears, was published by Princeton University Press in 2003. A scholar of Old English Literature and culture, Howe passed away in 2006.
