A Voice in the Void

i
A voice called, and I heard
And hearing, I replied:
It was no wandering bird
But a human voice that cried;
A lost voice in the night—
And do lost voices lie?
I took my self for light
And answered, Here am I.

ii
There was no world as yet,
No world, no way, no choice,
Only, in silence met,
Voice calling unto voice:
But with that clear response
My eye could dimly see,
And where was darkness once
A world began to be.
