This issue commemorates the retirement of Robert W Daniel, scholar, critic, teacher, editor, and writer, who came to Kenyon College in 1960 and served as chair of the Department of English from 1964 until 1973, while remaining active among scholars of literature. Assistant editor of the Kenyon Review and frequent contributor to other quarterlies, Professor Daniel’s continuing interest in improving the quality of writing and rhetoric manifested itself most tangibly in The Written Word (1960) and A Contemporary Rhetoric (1967). In conjunction with Monroe Beardsley he edited Theme and Form: An Introduction to Literature, which first appeared in 1956 and has since been frequently re-issued. His presence in the classroom and his editorial work for the Review will be deeply missed by his many students, colleagues, and friends.
