Invitation to Lunch

Talbot sighed and tried to put his mind on Englehart vs. Simpson. He picked up appellant’s brief, which caught his attention because it had been prepared by a firm of lawyers from a town near Prairie View. For a moment he was homesick for the dash and clutter of his office there, where secretaries didn’t wear hundred dollar suits and imported perfume. In another effort to fix his thoughts on the case, Talbot discarded appellant’s brief for that of appellee, which wasn’t any easier to read.

He did not hear the door open, and when he looked up in troubled confusion from the brief it was to see Eve smiling in at him. Immediately he wished she would come closer so that he could watch her move.
